Holmbush Farm is all set for a half-term of happy horrors following the arrival of an incredible new animal in its popular visitor barns. Down among the pigs, sheep, chickens and goats, visitors to the farm will now find a dragon lurking! Breathing smoke and prepared for all sorts of ghostly goings on, he's the star attraction during a week of Halloween high jinx from October 22 – 30.Halloween is always a thrilling time at Holmbush with creepy creatures putting in an appearance, and this year there will be a dragon’s den haunted by a ghostly Saint George, come to slay him, not to mention wicked witches, pumpkins galore and lots of fun Halloween crafts and spooky things to make and do. Take a tractor ride through the freaky forest if you dare or visit on October 26 & 27 to see some slightly smaller cold-blooded reptiles and snakes making a special visit with their handler Steve. The creative staff at the farm have been working overtime to create chills and thrills throughout the farm park and pictured here with the roaring dragon are (Pic 1) Louise Hurdman, Jaqui Tripp and Jo Bristow, all of Faygate.

Flower-power and dragons!

Did you see us at the Rudgwick Steam Rally? We were looking good! It was the rally's 25th anniversary so everyone dressed up in style. The Holmbush Farm gang revisited their flower-power days for their costumes and also had a special guest on their stand - an amazing dragon! If you missed him, don't worry - you may well be able to meet him again during our special Halloween week in October which this year has a Dungeons and Dragons theme. He's a real winner.

Get crafty with some all weather fun!

Never mind the weather - there is always something fun to do down at Holmbush Farm World. Tomorrow we have one of our special craft corner activity events so come on down and get creative. With soft play in the tea rooms, under cover hay bales to climb, indoor animal barns and inside pedal-tractor track there is plenty to do even if the rain is threatening! There are craft events at the farm throughout this month - on August 12, 19 & 26. See you there!

As the school summer holidays approach, we're all set for the season with new play equipment and a new calendar of fun events to entertain the kids. New for this season is an additional climbing zone with three funky spider web frames for kids to get busy on. Like all the playzones at Holmbush Farm, this new zone is perfect for imaginative play in the great outdoors. Come and have a clamber soon!

Fund-raising success

They did it!

Many congratulations to our 'Holmbush Floozies' who raised £1000 by joining the Race for Life in Tilgate Park, Crawley. The group of 10 members of staff, joined the 5km event to help raise money for Cancer Research UK. The group cut across all age ranges from 17 to 75 and completed the distance at varying speeds but all help swell the coffers of the charity successfully. Well done to them all.

Bouncing into fitness

An energetic team from Holmbush Farm World is currently in training around the farm – getting set for this year’s fund-raising Race for Life. They’ve been running along with the daily goat races on the farm, pacing themselves against the frolicking lambs and bouncing on the ever-popular bouncing pillow trampolines to help improve their fitness and stamina ready for the big race day on May 25. Race for Life is the largest women-only fundraising event in the UK. Since 1994, it has been bringing together women of all ages and fitness levels to walk, jog or run to help beat cancer. The ‘Holmbush Floozies’ as they are calling themselves will run the 5km in Tilgate Park, in Crawley. They include those who care for the Holmbush Farm animals and others who work in the tea room or behind the scenes, and everyone involved shares the common goal of raising money for Cancer Research UK. Be sure to cheer them on!

Josh was doing work experience at Holmbush Farm World just when the farm’s new lambs of the season began to arrived! Ahhhh

Let the lambing begin

Few moments in the seasonal calendar mark the start of spring better than the arrival of the first lambs. Check out this little lovely who arrived yesterday, he's pictured with one of our team, Jacqui Tripp. Visitors are now welcome to come and watch lambing in our lambing barns as the flock expands throughout April. The farm has over 150 ewes expected to deliver in the coming weeks with twins and triplets usually a regular occurrence. Spending time in the lambing barns can be both interesting and educational for children and parents alike. There are also opportunities at this time of year for visitors to help bottle feed any orphaned or particularly hungry arrivals.

Mother's Day Fun with new mums and mother hens

Mum’s the word at Holmbush Farm as the staff and animals prepare to help their visitors celebrate Mother’s Day in style with a special craft-making event. Farm worker, Jo Bristow, is a new mum herself and will be celebrating her first Mother’s Day on April 3 with her new daughter Lily, pictured here meeting the farm’s favourite Mother Hen, Emily, with Queen of the Coop, farm manager Louise Hurdsman. A day out on the farm, in Faygate, is a great way to celebrate Mother’s Day with fresh food – hot and cold – served in the tea barn to give mum a tasty treat and special activities laid on to keep the kids happy and content all day. During Mother’s Day there will also be a chance for children to join a craft making session creating their own personalised cards and presents for their mums.

Today's the day! We are open. The sun is out and the gates are open and it is time to come on down to the farm again and join in the fun. Valentine's Day romance at Holmbush Farm...

Holmbush Farm’s famous woolly pig, Winston, has found himself at the centre of a Valentine’s Day love triangle as the farm prepares to reopen for its new season on Thursday (February 17).

Winston is a rare curly-coated mangalitza pig and his official mate is a female mangalitza called Clementine. They have produced over 30 entertaining piglets in the past two years since they became a star attraction at the farm.

Now a new love interest has caught Winston’s eye within the animal viewing barns. Marilyn, is a buxom blonde mangalitza who has been making eyes at Winston across the hay bales. As Valentine’s Day approached Winston became torn between two lovers, wallowing like a pig in mud in the affections of both passionate porkers!

Holmbush farmer Harry Calvert says: “All three really are great friends and we are encouraging the romance in the hope of yet more adorable piglets – they are always a favourite here on the farm. Seeing the new additions – piglets, kids and lambs as well as chicks and rabbits - is always a popular activity in the barns as the season progresses, so the more the merrier!”

This half-term holiday is packed full of Halloween fun down on the farm. We've spooky tractor rides through our haunted forest, themed craft making sessions every day, pumpkins by the barrow load and scary streets full of ghosts and ghouls to explore. In fact there are witchy goings on all over the farm. Even Winston, everyone's favourite woolly-haired pig, is entering in the 'spirit' of things with his funky witches hat!

The count down has begun to the annual Cranleigh Show which happens this weekend and it looks like it is going to be a great day out in the sunshine. If you're coming along to the Cranleigh Show Ground, the fun goes on all day with show tents full of animals and interesting things to buy, plus equine competitions, exciting arena events and lots of countryside stalls. Holmbush Farm World will be there with some of our animals so do come and seek us out and say 'hello'. Should be a good day out - so hopefully see you there!

Everybody knows Holmbush Farm World is just the best of places for a birthday party and in the last couple of weeks it has been the best of places for new births too. We've had at least eight new bunny arrivals with more expected at any moment; and eight new turkeys hatched. One new arrival, a beautiful calf, made his appearance on one of the recent sporadic hot days and so he has been named accordingly: 'Scorcher'! Let's hope his naming sets a trend for the summer and we get plenty of sun and fun down on the farm. Do come and meet him and the other new arrivals soon.

Our animal barns have nine noisy new arrivals! Clementine, our adorable woolly pig has produced her latest litter of piglets and they are all snorting and squeaking their way around the pens as they get to know their new world. Winston, the proud father, is keeping a careful eye on them too and, as all our recent visitors will agree, the piglets are certainly full of energy and enthusiasm! Do come and visit them soon.

Election fever hits Holmbush

Election fever has gripped the nation and has even made its mark in the farmyard – in our lambing barns! Among the 130 lambs which have arrived this spring was a delivery of triplets who – in keeping with the current national obsession – have been named David, Gordon and Nick! Campaigning mostly for more milk and greener grass, the triplets have won the vote as everybody's current favourite! The race is clearly hotting up among the real election candidates and to add to the election fun on the farm, staff have been allocating party colours to the goats for a little election fun when they stage the daily goat races on the farm. To help everyone celebrate or commiserate the way things go on election day itself the farm has also booked Charlie the Clown to come and entertain visitors at the farm throughout May 6.

Woolly eggs spotted at Holmbush

You’ve seen the woolly sheep, you’ve seen the woolly pigs but now it is time to get back down to Holmbush Farm World and seek out the woolly eggs!

Yes, as Easter approaches and eggs of all shapes, sizes and flavours battle for attention, visitors to Holmbush Farm World are doing a double-take as they explore the animal barns and spot woolly eggs in amongst the chickens. We've been turning heads with its woolly attractions ever since Winston and Clementine, a rare breed of Mangalitza pigs arrived on the farm last year; and throughout April our woolly lambs are the stars of the show during lambing. This year however an added wonder has appeared – the woolly eggs. Kids visiting the farm are being challenged to hunt the eggs as they explore the farm and to try and discover exactly what these eggstraordinary things are!

Farmer Harry Calvert said: “The school Easter holidays are always an exciting time on the farm with spring beginning to show itself and lots of baby animals making their appearance. We have a range of special events going on throughout the holidays and our woolly eggs are sure to grab everyone’s attention!”

New arrivals!

The Holmbush family is growing once again! The first new arrivals of the year made their appearance last week with the birth of a Guernsey bull calf and some early lambs! The calf soon found his feet and is feeding well and the early lambs are getting lots of love and attention from the staff who are bottle feeding them. Spring must be on its way and we expect our lambing barns to really get busy from April 1. So prepare to shake off the last of the winter blues and spring in to spring at Holmbush Farm.

Love is in the air as Holmbush reopens!

Love was in the air as the gates opened on a new season at Holmbush Farm World this week. The farm emerged from its winter hibernation just in time for Valentines Day – and the half term holiday – and among the very first visitors through the door were regulars who love the farm and were eager to buy their annual season tickets ready for their multiple visits through 2010..

The farm has added a number of new pieces of play equipment for 2010 and has an extensive calendar of special events lined up including magic shows, visiting clowns, circus workshops and snake, reptile and creepy crawlies events. First up will be Poz’s Magic and Punch and Judy Shows on February 16 and 17 for half term fun next week. It's full of fun whatever the weather with plenty to see both inside and out including indoor animal barn, tea barn and indoor toddler soft play area. We hope to see you here very soon!

Snowballing towards Spring!

We've never seen snow like it here at Holmbush Farm World! The farm has been completely blanketed in snow for the past two weeks but despite the worse conditions for decades, preparations are well in hand for the new season and the animals have been having a ball. It is not often our animals get to see their fields covered in so much snow and they really have been enjoying it. The Shetland ponies have had fun rolling in it and the llamas have been galloping around with glee. We don’t think our miniature donkeys had ever seen snow before and they were very intrigued – it has been great fun watching them all try to work out just what has happened to their usually green world! Their thick coats mean they are all pretty resilient to the wintry weather although we have had to bring in more hay and feed for them as even the most determined have struggled to dig through the snow to the grass! The farm’s famous woolly pigs have been particularly cosy under their rare curly locks and the alpachas don’t bat an eyelid in the cold weather thanks to their fabulous woollen coats.

We reopen on February 11 - whatever the weather - ready for the half term holidays with a number of new pieces of play equipment and an extensive calendar of special events lined up including magic shows, visiting clowns, circus workshops and snake, reptile and creepy crawlies events. Half term Halloween happenings!

We're planning our biggest and most fun-packed Halloween event to date for this year's half term and the staff are all hard at work creating costumes and decorating the farm and barns ready for an action-packed week of spooky goings on. The cobwebs are gathering and the pumpkins harvested for carving and the fun will start on October 24, running through to November 2. There will be a wide range of family-friendly ghostly goings on with tractor rides through the specially created haunted woods, ghoulish gatherings in the spooky barns, a new creepy crypt and lots of wizardry and witches spells to get involved in. We'll have a trick or treat cauldron and scary gifts and spells plus Halloween lanterns and plenty of witchy games and crafts. So do pull on your own costumes, dust off your broomsticks and come along to join in the fun.

Holmbush gets a clean bill of health

Concerns about the risks of E-coli on farms have been dominating our thoughts over the past week but we are happy to let you all know that the Environmental Health Officers from Horsham District Council have been around to check on our operation and have given us a clean bill of health.

E coli lives in the gut of farm animals but causes them no ill-effects. We have always been clear that it is important for everyone to wash their hands carefully after handling animals and have always encouraged our visitors to do just that. We are pleased to report there have been no cases of E-coli linked to Holmbush Farm and would like to reassure visitors that we are taking all possible measures to ensure that continues to be the case. If you remain worried we would draw your attention to the Health and Safety Executive's advice on the risk of the bacterium on farms which reads: "The risks are readily controlled by simple everyday measures. Primary amongst these is the need for good personal hygiene. Infection can result from exposure to bacteria from animals or animal faeces and then eating, drinking or smoking without first thoroughly washing your hands." This is exactly the advice and guidance we have been giving our visitors for many years. For further information you can see the government Health and Safety Executive’s website at www.hse.gov.uk.

By coincidence we have recently moved our petting animals off the farm for a small holiday while we use their barn for our annual Halloween extravaganza. This is set to be the best yet with lots of spooky fun and games planned for during the October half term. Watch this space for more details!

Get steamed up in Rudgwick

Harvest is now underway at Holmbush but some of us will be taking a break from that this weekend to head off to the annual Rudgwick Steam and Country Show in Rudgwick on the West Sussex/Surrey border. Running from Saturday through to the end of the Bank Holiday on Monday this is always a fun show and you can come and meet us and some of our animals as well as seeing a wide range of other interesting agricultural and country attractions too. There will be all kinds of steam engines on display plus a celebration of 50 years of the great British Triumph Bonneville and music from the New Forest Plonkers! The show is held on a 44 acre site and with craft marquees and children's entertainment alongside the steam attractions there really is something for all the family. Poz our favourite magician, who regularly comes to the farm with his Punch and Judy show, will also be in Rudgwick. So, hope to see you there!

NEVER MIND THE WEATHER!

Never mind the weather - there is plenty to do down on the farm this month whatever the conditions outside. July and August are fun months to visit as there are a number of special events running alongside our usual attractions. Check out the craft corner activities with the kids on July 24 and July 31 or for something different visit us on July 29 when there will be snakes and reptiles visiting for the day; or on July 31 when a collection of amazing creepy crawlies will be our special guests for the day.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION...

Keep watch on your TV screens this autumn as we’ve had film-crews and celebrities mingling with the pigs, goats and chickens for a BBC TV programme. Hosted by celebrity food fanatic Stefan Gates, the programme called Gastronuts sees intrepid kids go wild on culinary adventures as they discover the truth about what we eat and where it comes from. The 15-strong Objective Productions team and four city kids descended on the farm for a two-day shoot. The programme is aimed at 6-12 year olds and its goal is to help raise awareness of food and nutrition among the younger generation. The host, Stefan Gates has previously written three foodie books: 101 Dishes to Eat Before You Die, Gastronaut – about the darker side of food from flatulence to cannibalism; and In the Danger Zone linked to the BBC Four programme looking at what’s on the menus in extreme locations around the world.

Sheep shearing

Make a date to pop down to the farm on June 6 or 7 and you can see some master sheep shearers in action. There are over 300 sheep on the farm and about this time of year it is time to give them all a major hair cut. Keeping them still and removing all their wool in a quick and painless way is quite a skill. The sheep shearers know their stuff and watching them in action will take your breath away! Squeak piggy, squeak squeak

There are new additions at Holmbush Farm World this week with the arrival of our latest litter of piglets. Pictured here with Lesley Armstrong taking a break from working in our tea room, the piglets certainly love to squeak and squeal! The proud parents are Winston and Clementine - our famous rare woolly pigs - and their little piglets have certainly arrived full of energy and enthusiasm. We have also adopted an additional woolly pig to be part of the Holmbush family and she's attracting plenty of attention too as, unusually, she is white!

The donkeys are named!

Congratulations to Jordan Swallow, aged 9, and Belle Mills, aged 6, who have won themselves a free visit to the farm by entering our competition to name our new miniature donkeys. Jordan, from Cranleigh in Surrey chose the name of Jake for the darker donkey and Belle suggested Charlie for the light-coloured donkey. The miniature donkeys were new arrivals to the farm for this season and are a great hit. Belle's mum said: "Belle is horse and donkeys mad and she absolutely loved the miniature donkeys. All the family love the farm - it's so pretty and makes such a lovely, easy day out. We are delighted that we will be able to come again soon to see the donkeys now they have their new names!"

Swine fever information

A number of regular visitors to the farm have called us worrying about the risks of Swine flu. Our poor woolly pigs - Winston and Clementine (due to farrow any day now!) have been most offended! Swine flu contagion is not in fact now in anyway related to pigs.

Speaking to the Newspaper Society at the Palace of Westminster, Environment Secretary, Hilary Benn said: “The UK and some other members of the European Union undertake routine surveillance to help detect the presence of animal diseases not normally present in the EU and to identify any change in the prevalence of diseases that do occur. Results of our surveillance suggest that this variant of H1N1 does not appear to be present in pigs in the UK or anywhere else in the EU. However we are taking this developing situation very seriously and will maintain our surveillance effort, keeping the public and industry informed of any developments."

Action-packed April

April is an action-packed month down on the farm with lambing underway and a succession of special events scheduled to keep our visitors busy. Watching the new lambs take their first steps and helping out with the bottle feeding is always a favourite activity at this time of year but there is also lots going on beyond the lambing pens to entertain the kids throughout the Easter holidays. Next up is Charlie the clown on April 7 who will be falling and fooling around all day, followed by Bosco's circus workshops on April 9. There will be Easter craft activities on Friday April 10 and 17 and Huxley's birds of prey demonstrations on April 15. Poz's magic and Punch and Judy shows take to the floor on April 16 and 17. So do keep an eye on our events calendar and do come and visit us soon and join in all the fun.

Stars of the show!

Josh and Herman were the stars of the show last weekend at the fab Family Fun weekend held at Shoots Garden Centre just outside Worthing. There was all sorts of spring time fun, activities and events going on at the garden centre but our pony and donkey had plenty of attention as they made their guest apppearance! There's lots to do in the garden and down on the farm at this time of year and we'll be back at Shoots on April 7-8 and 14-15 for further special events - this time we'll be taking some of our new born lambs as lambing will be well underway by then. We expect the first lambs to arrive early in April so do make a date to pop along to the farm soon and be a part of it all!

New Arrival!

The daffodils are out and the days are getting longer and guess what - our first new arrival of the season has made its appearance! No lambs as yet, but our first little kid goat has arrived and is already the star of the show with visitors. All the animals (and the humans!) are enjoying the warmer weather and getting ready for more fun and frolics through spring. Two of them are set for an early outing too this week - off to Shoots Garden Centre just outside Worthing as part of a Family Fun Weekend being run there - so if you're in that area pop in and see Josh our pony and Herman the donkey - visiting Shoots on March 21 and 22. And do come by the farm and meet our new arrival soon!

Sun's out... snow's gone

Spring must surely be on its way. The snow has gone and the sun is out and there is lots of activity going on in our barns today as we prepare to bring the sheep in for lambing at the beginning of April. Make a date for your diary - there is nothing sweeter than to see the 'big squeeze' and we're expecting around 200 lambs - they'll start arriving from the end of March or beginning of April. During the winter months we’ve been busy giving the pens and animal barns a fresh coat of paint and preparing the ground for our new attractions for 2009.

We had to go half way across the country to find our lovely miniature donkeys but they quickly settled in and are now very much a part of the Holmbush family. During the early weeks of opening we are running a competition to try and find the perfect name for the donkeys so do come along, take a look at them and see if you can put a name to their faces!

Out in the play areas we are really bouncing into spring with the introduction of two giant Jumping Pillows! If you haven’t seen these kind of things before you are in for a treat – they are great fun for children who like to bounce and are at low level so, unlike trampolines, there is no fear of falling off.
